.kr is the ccTLD for the Republic of Korea, or South Korea. It is managed by the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA).[1]
Rules and Restrictions
[edit | edit source]The .kr domain name is restricted to use by companies, organizations, and individuals who have a postal address within the Republic of Korea.[2]
Second-level Domains
[edit | edit source]In the .kr domain, registration is available at the second level, or at the third level under a variety of use-restricted second level domains. As well as the SLDs listed below, there are region-specific SLDs for use by "any organization, company and/or individuals connected with that region" (seoul, busan, daegu, incheon, gwangju, daejeon, ulsan, gyeonggi, gangwon, chungbuk, chungnam, jeonbuk, jeonnam, gyeongbuk, gyeongnam, and jeju).

Characters
[edit | edit source]The requirements for third level domains are as follows:
- letters of the alphabet [A to Z] or [a to z], numbers [0 to 9], and hyphens are available for use for domain names.;
- domain name shall contain a minimum of 2 characters and a maximum of 63 characters.
- domain name shall not begin or end with a hyphen. Consecutive hyphens are not allowed between the third and the fourth characters.
Requirements for second level domains are as follows:
- a second level domain name must contain Hangeul characters (2,350 characters). Letters of the alphabet [A to Z] or [a to z], numbers [0 to 9], and hyphens are also available for second level domain name use with the exception of a combination of numbers and hyphens only;
- a domain name shall contain a minimum of 3 characters and a maximum of 63 characters, unless it contains Hangeul, in which case it shall contain a minimum of 2 characters and a maximum of 17 characters;
- a domain name shall not begin or end with a hyphen. Consecutive hyphens are not allowed between the third and the fourth characters.[2]
Usage
