ICANN Involvment
[edit | edit source]Alan Barrett is currently a member of the [ICANN Board]] and was appointed by the AfriNIC Board to represent AfriNIC to the NRO Number Council for one year, starting in January 2011.[1] He was appointed by AfriNIC to ICANN's Address Supporting Organization to serve through 2012; he also serves as that body's Vice-Chair.[2]

Education
[edit | edit source]Alan holds a B.Sc.Eng. and M.Sc.Eng from the University of KwaZulu-Natal(then called the University of Natal), Burban, South Africa.
Career
[edit | edit source]In 1990/1991 he was involved in setting up the first Internet connection for South African Universities. After he was co-founder of the first commercial ISP in South Africa, then called TICSA, later Internet Africa and UUNET South Africa(1993-1999).
Alan then joined CEQURUX, a small Internet firewall company, where he worked until the company went out of business in 2007.
Was co-author of the 1997 proposal to create AFRINIC and appointed CEO in 2015.
