Registro.it is the registry operator for Italy's .it ccTLD.[1] It is a project of the Istituto di Informatica e Telematica del CNR, the latest organization within the Italian National Research Council (CNR) to manage the .it domain.[2] Through subsidiary agencies, CNR has operated the registry since it was delegated in 1987.[1]
The registry operates on a registry-registrar model, where registration is handled by accredited registrars.[3]

The .it domain is an Open Use ccTLD. Residents of countries in the European Economic Area (EEA), the Vatican, the Republic of San Marino, and Switzerland may register names.[4] There are some restrictions on second level domain registrations, notably .edu.it, which is only available to schools within Italy.[4] As of March 2021, the domain has over three million active registrations.[5]
